Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the United States. Here at Dermatology Associates of Seattle we see acne in both teens and adults and offer several effective acne treatments for patients with mild to severe cases. We find that most patients do very well with individualized treatments and have seen outstanding results with the addition of Isolaz treatments. Since we are a research center, we are often enrolling new patients in clinical trials and are researching new medicine for acne.  Please let our staff know if you would like to participate in a clinical study for acne treatment.

  • Isotretinoin

Used For:   Isotretinoin is a vitamin A derivative that has been found to be very effective in severe, disfiguring or resistant acne vulgaris and is managed by the Federal Drug Agency (FDA).

Results:  There has been great success in less severe acne and several other conditions, that are resistant to other treatments. There is little doubt that it will improve acne to an impressive degree, and many adult male patients are permanently cured, needing no further therapy. Some patients will require mild topical therapy for maintenance, some will need long term maintenance, and a small minority will require a second course of Isotretinoin. Very rarely a third course is needed. The permanent success rate is lower for women and anyone less than 20 years old.

Maintenance:  Although more than one treatment session may be necessary, any results obtained seem to be very long lasting and no maintenance treatments are required. Initial treatment sessions are 5-6 months long.

Required For Treatment:  All patients must be registered with the online iPLEDGE program by our office prior to starting their medication. Women of child-bearing potential have strict pregnancy monitoring dictated by the FDA. Patients will be asked to review and sign iPLEDGE consent forms, patients will be given iPLEDGE booklets that outline the program and requirements while on the medication. Patients can only receive a maximum of a 30-day supply of isotretinoin per prescription. For each prescription, continuation of therapy requires the patient to satisfy the iPLEDGE program requirements which includes monthly provider visits and All patients should understand that refills have to be requested in person during their consultation and will not be refilled over the phone.
