PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma has been around for decades and has been used for facial rejuvenation, would healing, and other orthopedic related injuries. In the last couple of years, the use of PRP for hair loss in both men and women has become very popular. Patients are seeing great results from using their own platelets to help restore hair in areas of loss or thinning. We have provided answers to some of the most frequently asked questions for this new PRP hair treatment.
What is PRP and how does it work?
PRP is a naturally produced product created by your body that contains healing growth factors. It was initially used for wound healing to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissue but has been shown to promote hair growth. A small amount of blood is drawn, then spun in a special centrifuge for PRP to separate different parts of the blood including the platelet rich plasma. We then take that plasma rich protein injection and insert it into the areas of thinning or baldness. By administering the platelet rich plasma into the area of the damaged hair follicles, it increases the body’s naturally occurring wound healing response which in turn stimulates hair growth, strengthens hair follicles, and increases hair density. The total procedure from start to finish is usually done in about an hour.
What are the risk and benefits of PRP treatments?
The risks associated with these plasma injections are very minimal. Some common symptoms you may experience after the injection are mild soreness or bruising at the injection site and rarely some swelling.
The main benefit of this procedure is that this is a non-surgical restoration treatment. This means no surgery, no major preparation needed before or after the plasma injections, and best of all you can go about your day right after the procedure! The procedure is quick, simple, safe, and the results you will see are going to be natural looking hair.
How often do I need these platelet injections and when will I see results?
During the beginning phase of your journey, you will schedule your plasma injections on a monthly basis for 3-4 months. After your initial treatment, the injections will be given in 3-6 month intervals. Some patients see results after the first couple of injections. Results will vary for each patient and will be discussed during your consult.
How do I know if I would be a good candidate for PRP treatment?
Both men and women who are suffering from hair loss, thinning or androgenic alopecia may be a good candidate for PRP treatments. If you suffer from any type of platelet dysfunction, chronic liver disease, some skin diseases, or other disorders, you may not be eligible.
