As a newborn or child, our skin is at its most plump and best condition.
When we age our skin is constantly changing and our youthful complexion is harder to retain. Having a good at-home skincare routine with beneficial ingredients like Vitamins A, C, and E can drastically reduce the signs of aging.
We are naturally born with Vitamin A. When exposed to the sun or other environmental factors our Vitamin A diminishes causing us to age. One of the biggest contributors to aging is the sun. UVA damage depletes our skin’s vitamin A resulting in sun damage and wrinkles. Vitamin A is what I like to call our one stop shop key ingredient. Not only can it assist with exfoliation, lifting pigment (hyperpigmentation), and acne, if applied to the skin nightly, it can prevent aging, leaving the skin looking smoother. Though Vitamin A is crucial in the anti-aging process, if applied in higher percentages, it can be more irritating than beneficial. That is why we recommend using Vitamin A in smaller percentages and forms such as Retinyl Acetate or Retinyl Palmitate.
Vitamins C & E
Vitamins C and E are known for their anti-oxidant properties. Vitamin C can help lighten and brighten the skin allowing more of a radiant glow and Vitamin E helps prevent free radical damage (which can lead to skin cancers) and retains the skin’s moisture barrier.
With these three key ingredients, you can be on your way to having your skin looking youthful. As always, here at Dermatology Associates, we recommend daily sunscreen, since the sun is the biggest contributor to aging. Applying a sunscreen daily with a minimum SPF of 30 is always recommended no matter the weather conditions (overcast-yes this one’s for you, Seattleites).
Some of my personal favorite products that have these vitamins and other beneficial ingredients are the Environ AVST Line, Environ C-Quence Serum Series, Neo-Cutis’ Micro-Day and the Teoxane line. These products are perfect for preventative and aging skin. I personally use the C-Quence Serum 1 and have felt a huge difference in texture, smoothness, and hydration in my skin. <
