Skin Laxity Symptoms and Causes

Skin laxity causes and treatments

Skin Laxity is something that everyone will experience as we age regardless of how much we work out or how healthy we eat.

Incidence: Very Common
○ Occurs in everyone at some stage
○ Treatable by a medical professional
○ Lab tests or imaging not required

For skin to be tight, it needs collagen and elastin, which are two components of the layer of the skin called the dermis. Elastin and collagen are found just above the fat layer which lies beneath our dermis. When we begin to age, we lose these two vital components, so our skin starts to lose elasticity resulting in loose or sagging skin.

Cause of skin laxity: Skin laxity is something everyone will face at some point in their life due to the natural aging process. Besides aging, there are other factors that can play a part in skin laxity, such as intrinsic and extrinsic factors, genetics, diet, lifestyle, sun exposure, stress and smoking.

What does skin laxity look like?

Skin Laxity is usually self-diagnosable: Gravity combined with volume loss pulls the looser skin downwards. The face will show some “jowling” as early as the 30′s. Puffiness and bags under the eyes can also be due in part to skin laxity. Laxity elsewhere on the body can show as fine crinkly lines and wrinkles and can exacerbate the appearance of cellulite.

Skin Laxity Treatments:

Self-care for skin laxity: Chronic sun exposure is a leading cause of laxity by acceleration the break down of elastic tissue in the skin. Long term daily broad spectrum sunscreen use can greatly help to decrease this sign of aging.

Our Clinical Skin Laxity Treatment:

Skin tightening is a non-surgical procedure done with radiofrequency or infrared IPL. This procedure gently heats the collagen to a prescribed temperature for a prescribed length of time which causes the skin to tighten. The effects of this procedure are noticeable immediately after the treatment, and there is no downtime. The skin will eventually relax again so maintenance treatments are recommended.
